Effect of Music on Gene Expression and Epigenetic Regulation: An Integrated Study Using Bioinformatics, Forensic Psychology and Musicology

Abstract

Music is an important part of human life. It can affect our emotions, memory, thinking, stress, and behaviour. Scientists are also interested in understanding whether these effects can influence biological processes inside the body. Music does not normally change the actual DNA sequence. However, it may influence how some genes work or how strongly they are expressed. This area can be studied using molecular biology and bioinformatics. Bioinformatics helps scientists analyse large amounts of biological information such as DNA, RNA, and gene-expression data. Forensic psychology helps us understand how people respond to music emotionally and mentally. Musicology helps us understand the characteristics of music, such as rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, and structure. By combining these three areas, researchers can study how different types of music may influence psychological, physiological, and molecular responses.

Keywords

Music; DNA; gene expression; epigenetics; bioinformatics; forensic psychology; forensic musicology; stress; neuroscience; transcriptomics; DNA methylation; music perception.

Conclusion

Music can influence human emotions, memory, stress, and physiological responses. These effects provide a possible pathway through which music may indirectly influence biological processes involved in gene regulation. However, music does not normally change the actual DNA sequence. The more accurate concept is that music may influence gene expression and possibly epigenetic regulation through psychological, neural, hormonal, and cellular pathways. Forensic psychology helps explain individual differences in emotional response, memory, perception, and behavior. Musicology helps describe and analyze the musical stimulus. Bioinformatics provides the computational methods required to analyze large amounts of molecular data. Therefore, the relationship can be summarized as: Music → Psychology → Physiology → Gene Regulation → Bioinformatics. This interdisciplinary approach provides an interesting and potentially valuable area for postgraduate research. However, more experimental evidence is required before specific gene-expression or epigenetic changes caused by music can be considered established or useful as forensic biomarkers.
